Hey- I didn't say it. Fran Di Giacomo did.
And it would seem, since this book (and others with controversial titles like it) is still on the market via reputable websites, that many Cancer survivors out there would readily say the same. With a huge grin on their face to boot.
Fran Di Giacomo's book, I'd Rather Do Chemo Than Clean Out the Closet, is just one of several books available whose authors have a mission to, as Di Giacomo's book cover explains, help Cancer survivors choose "laughter over tears".
Other books that use humor as a coping strategy for the pain that comes along with Cancer include:
Thanks for the Mammogram
by Laura Jensen Walker
and
Not Now...I'm Having a No Hair Day: Humor and Healing for People with Cancer
by Christine K. Clifford
It is a solid fact that laughter is good for the body. It has been said to help decrease anxiety, lower the level of stress hormones in the blood, energize and combat fatigue, along with many other positive effects.
So it sounds like these authors have the right idea to help heal with humor. And as someone who has been fortunate enough to avoid confronting this scary disease thus far in my life, I can definitely see how these books could cheer someone up and make them smile. At the same time, though, I can't help but wonder if there are people out there who might be offended by these book titles.
Cancer Survivors and family/friends: Please speak up.
As the pharmaceutical company, AstraZeneca, put it, in a brochure where these books were featured as helpful tools and cancer resources,
"The joke's on you. And it could lead to a better frame of mind."
What do you think?
